3D Sole Design + Printing + Grasshopper
This course is split up in two parts that can be taken in a row, or separately.
We start with 4 days of 3D design training in Rhino, especially for soles. This is
ideal for professional footwear designers that are new to 3D design and want to create their own sole units in 3D, either for prototyping or actual wearable soles. After 4 days of fulltime class you will be able to:
- create or adjust a shoe last in Rhino 3D
- design midsoles/outsoles (and heels) for a digital last
- print your sole, heel and last on an affordable FDM printer
- understand the current state of the main 3D printing technologies
- distinguish the most suitable 3D printing materials for footwear
- understand the differences between designing for sole moulding or for 3D printing
After the first exercises you will be able to work on a sole for your brand or employer. The images on this page show just the first sole prototypes, since we will not publish any designs that will be produced commercially.
After a break on Sunday, we continue with a 3-day Grasshopper introduction course, again specifically tailored to shoe designers. Grasshopper is a plugin for Rhino that will let you create series of designs that you could simply never draw by hand, because they are too complex and/or require too much data for one human to process.
For instance, all the beautiful, coral-like lattice structures that you see for 3D printed midsoles - like the one Carbon made with Adidas - are created with generative design software like Grasshopper. But it can do way more than just that! In these 3 days you will first learn what generative design is and what it could do for footwear in general. After that you will get to know the interface and the basics of visual scripting, which you will then use to create complex 2D and 3D textures for both uppers, soles and footwear accessories. Designers that already have knowledge of Rhino can take these days separately. Those who are new to 3D design we advise to take both courses.
Generative design is an entirely new way of thinking that is not only fascinating to learn, it is actually an essential future skill for any designer. Rather than drawing individual designs, you set up a system that creates and optimizes designs for you, based upon the data that you enter into the system you created. Dates: Rhino and 3D printing is from June 19-22, Grasshopper is from June 24-26, 2019, Class hours: 9:00 - 17:30 each day

Level: intermediate, participants must have experience in shoe design, but no prior knowledge of 3D design is required. For those that only want to follow the Grasshopper training, we do require prior knowledge of Rhino. We will assess your knowledge level before you enter the course.

Price for just Rhino + 3D printing: €1750
Price for just Grasshopper: €1250
Payment conditions: all prices are excluding 21% VAT, if applicable. The course price is to be paid in advance, 50% down-payment is required upon registration to reserve your spot.
Included in the course price: use of 3D printers and basic 3D printing materials
Not included in the course price: travel costs, breakfast, lunch and diner, Rhino and Grasshopper software, any special 3D printing materials
Required materials: participants have to bring their own laptop with Rhino 5 or 6 and Grasshopper installed, there are free evaluation versions available. You will also need a mouse, not just a trackpad! For those that also want to follow Grasshopper we require that you bring a PC laptop, not a Mac! Rhino does work on both Mac and PC but Grasshopper only works on PC.
